Home News & Events Gardening Elective
As part of our Electives Program, young people at Closeburn House School have been transforming space outside our art room with a raft of donated, found or foraged resources – all that we’ve bought are some seeds, some compost and Colin the courgette plant.
Week one: We cleaned the area outside the art room and planted peas and beans.
Week two: We planted potatoes in old tyres and re-potted some of our beans who have already outgrown their (egg box) seed tray! We also made trellis from foraged branches and string.
We’re really looking forward to next week when we should have some more seedlings ready to re-pot, as well as some sunflower seeds and sweet peas to plant.
The Electives Program has been hugely successful since it’s launch in 2022, with students self-selecting an area of interest offered by teachers, and then working together to achieve an outcome. The program has been incredibly successful in raising pupils self-esteem and attainment. Our electives change each term, with some sticking all year round due to their popularity. Previous electives have included photography, hill walking, arts & crafts, baking, drama and our hugely popular Warhammer elective which is now firmly part of weekly life for our students!
