Autism in Girls and Young Women: Recognition, Understanding and Clinical Practice

Autism has traditionally been understood through a predominantly male framework, contributing to many autistic girls and young women being overlooked, misunderstood, or diagnosed later in life.

This specialist training explores how autism may present differently in females and what this means for professionals working across education, health, and care services.

Delivered by the clinical team at Holistic Childcare and Education, this session combines clinical expertise, current research, and lived-experience perspectives to support earlier recognition and more effective support strategies.

The presentation draws on research linked with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King’s College London, including work associated with Professor Francesca Happé and Dr Freya Spicer-White.

This event is suitable for:

  • Teachers, PSAs, and education professionals in Scotland
  • Psychologists and therapists
  • CAMHS and healthcare practitioners
  • Social workers and family support professionals
  • Youth workers and pastoral staff

What you’ll learn:

✔ Why autistic girls are often under-recognised
✔ Differences in female autism presentation
✔ Camouflaging and masking behaviours
✔ Mental health risks linked to delayed identification
✔ Listening to the voices of autistic girls and women
✔ Practical reflections for professional practice
